What is large format printing?

Large format printing refers to any printing that is done on a large scale... much larger than print that could be achieved on a conventional A3 office printer.

This could include billboards, vinyl wraps and stickers, banners, flags and trade show displays.

Large format printing is done using specialised printers designed to accommodate larger than normal sizes of paper and other materials, including fabric, vinyl, and canvas, which are mainly roll-fed allowing continuous printing.

Large format printers are also available with flat beds to allow printing direct onto rigid materials
such as Foamex, Correx and Dibond. This makes them ideal for large projects which are frequently
used for indoor and outdoor signage.

What type of printers are used?

UV-Based Inkjet Printers:
These printers use a drying mechanism that is completely different from that of solvent inkjet printers. UV rays reach the curable liquid ink which then transforms it from a liquid to a solid on the selected substrate. UV-based Inkjet printers also offer enhanced outdoor durability without needing to use a laminate and are usually set up as flatbeds, which means they can print a wide variety of material substrates such as Foamex, Correx and Di-Bond.

Digital textile printers

These printers print directly onto fabric using a dye-sublimation printing process.
The sublimation inks react with heat and pressure.
They transform into a gaseous state and when heat is applied to the substrate, the pores of the substrate open up, allowing the gaseous dye to flow into the open pores. As the substrate cools, its pores close, permanently locking the inks into the fabric.
This method is perfect for producing flags and many other fabric based displays.

All of these products produced need to be trimmed, glued or sewn so the whole process is more complicated than just the machines doing all the work.
